To protect the internal network is advisable to separate the network into individual function blocks, depending on the external threat. It is, therefore, reasonable to move the transfer tasks from the office server to a DMZ system if there is an Internet connection. This reduces the vulnerable area to an extreme degree because the mail transfer agent does not have any user accounts or mail-boxes.

The result is, inevitably, that all those well-known "brute force" attacks based on hacked user names/passwords, come to nothing.

In addition, a virus scanner/spam filter could filter out any unwanted and dangerous e-mails.
